Evens, odds and ends

Bethany, our six year old, is learning arithmetic.  When her older sister was counting by two's and learning the difference between odd and evens, I enjoyed revisiting those simple concepts and watching her discover them for the first time.  So I was a little surprised at myself enjoying it a second time but it is different (and equally fun).  The initial discovery of these simpler concepts that can be built upon to understand the more complex mathematical formula's is really enjoyable to watch (even the second time around). If only my enthusiasm was contagious. I came to love and respect math and science long after I got out of high school (late in my college career) its usefulness finally stuck home.  Obviously counting comes in pretty useful in Inventory control (counting by two's, tens and twelves) but understanding the principles of algebra is huge for basic problem solving and creating project spreadsheets. So, as my two girls go on a similar path of not liking or accepting the inevitable need to learn this stuff, I can only be there to show them how  important it is to your future to enbace these concepts, put in the time to practice and learn these skills, and it doesn't hurt to go ahead and enjoy it a little bit (if you can). I do.
